About

My name is Lucy Irving and I am a student at the University of Brighton (City College Campus) in my final year of doing a BA (Hons) degree in Digital Media Design.

For my first project of my final year we have been set a brief called "Design Futures". The focus of this brief was to look at upcoming technologies and develop a concept based on these technologies looking around 10 years into the future.

To fulfil this brief I began to look at how we are already changing, augmenting and extending our bodies and came across the area of Sensory Substitution . The technology behind this is explained in the “What is Sensory Substitution?” section on the homepage.

I found this subject incredibly interesting and I began to consider how the technologies which are already around at the moment might eventually combine to create a more fulfilling Sensory Substitution experience.

The final concepts I have created can be seen in the Demo area of the website.

I have created this website for the following reasons:

  • As a culmination of my work over the course of this project.

  • To link to and thank Peter B.L. Meijer, who has been of great help throughout the project and is already helping many people worldwide with his vOICe software which enables the blind to “explore synthetic vision through auditory video representations”.

  • To increase awareness and understanding of past, current and future Sensory Substitution technologies.

  • To show my concept (Demo) to the outside world, to see what they think of my ideas and maybe, through the Wiki area of the site, grasp a “real” idea of what may become of Sensory Substitution technology in the future.

I hope you will enjoy the work on this website and please feel free to email me with any comments or suggestions at info@sensorysubstitution.co.uk.
